Yorkshire Penny win a super final

Selby League second division side Yorkshire Penny won the Challenge cup beating first division Fairburn United. Penny almost threw away victory after losing a 3-0 lead. Penny started the brighter with strikers Craig Tankard and Andrew Burton caused Fairburn's defence problems with their pace. The duo were foiled by good saves from Gareth Athorn in the Fairburn goal. Penny struck from a corner when the ball was volleyed home by Craig Tankard. With Fairburn pushing forward it took a last ditch tackle from James Lee to keep the scoreline 1-0 at half time. Ten minutes into the second half Craig Tankard raced through beating a couple of defenders before firing home. Beavers made it 3-0 with a good shot from the edge of the area into the top corner. With only ten minutes left a defensive mix up gifted what looked like a consolation goal when Steve Ward found the back of the net Within minutes Fairburn scored a second when Glen Jackson fired home from close range. Fairburn scored the equaliser with only a minute left when Penny conceded a free kick 25yds out and Steve Ward hit a screamer into the top corner. With the game in extra time Fairburn pushed on only to for Penny keeper Darren Crewe to make a couple of good saves to deny Fairburn. Five minutes into the second period Craig Tankard was brought down in the penalty area and from the spot Andrew Burton sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to clinch the cup for Penny.

Kellingley v Featherstone match report

Welfare went out 4-3 on penalties after dominating this game for long periods. Kellingley had the better of the exchanges in the opening 20 minutes, Steve Worsfold hitting the crossbar with a long range effort. Collieries then came more into the game with Sam Harrison going close on a couple of occasions. Kellingley applied the pressure in the second half when Kevin Duckworth was flattened in the box and he duly slotted the spot kick away. Not to be out done Collieries were level within 2 minutes when Richard Walker blasted the ball home after a defensive mix up. Duckworth set up Paul Cawthorne after a flowing move but his strike went inches wide.Adam Perry was in inspiring form in the nets and came to Collieries rescue on a number of occasions, and saving two point blank chances. The game went into extra time and neither side could break the deadlock, with both keepers making saves to keep their teams in the game.
